China's navy and coast guard have been busy lately, with a lot of ships out in East Asian waters. At one point, there were over 100 vessels, which is a lot more than usual. This isn't just any old exercise; it's the biggest show of maritime muscle China has put on so far.
China often does military exercises during this time of year, but this time, it's different. There's no big official announcement, but the ships are out there, stretching from the Yellow Sea all the way to the South China Sea and even into the Pacific. Four security officials in the region say this is happening, and they've got intelligence reports to back it up.
This big naval display comes at a tense time. China and Japan are in a diplomatic spat after Japan's Prime Minister made some strong comments about Taiwan. Plus, Taiwan's President just announced a big boost in defense spending, which didn't go down well in Beijing.
Taiwan is keeping a close eye on all this. They say they know what's going on and can handle it. They're also working with other countries to make sure things stay stable. One official said China is testing the waters with this big deployment, but not everyone thinks it's a big deal. Some say it's just routine exercises.
The ships aren't just sitting there; they're practicing mock attacks and blocking maneuvers. But even with all this activity, the number of ships near Taiwan hasn't gone up much. The last big named exercise around Taiwan was back in April, but China didn't confirm if they did any drills during last December's big naval activity.
