China is claiming that the U. S. National Security Agency (NSA) used sneaky cyber tools to break into a Chinese time center. They say the NSA exploited weaknesses in a foreign phone brand's messaging services to steal data from the National Time Service Center’s staff back in 2022. The exact brand wasn't mentioned, but it's clear they're not happy.
From 2023 to 2024, the NSA allegedly used 42 different types of "special cyberattack weapons" to target the center’s internal systems. They even tried to hack into a key timing system. China says they have proof, but they didn't share any details in their post.
The National Time Service Center is a big deal. It keeps China's official time and provides timing services to important industries like communications, finance, power, transport, and defense. China claims they've given the center advice on how to fix these security risks.
China also accused the U. S. of doing exactly what it's been accused of doing. They said the U. S. keeps talking about Chinese cyber threats, but maybe they should look at their own actions first.
This isn't the first time Western governments have accused Chinese hackers of targeting officials, journalists, and corporations. China's statement could make things even tenser between Washington and Beijing, especially with all the other issues they're dealing with, like trade, technology, and Taiwan.
The U. S. Embassy didn't comment right away.
